Matt Reeves latest iteration of the dark night of Gotham is set to hit cinemas this March and its looking like the most dark, gritty and crime focused Batman movie yet.

DC is synonymous with the caped crusader, much so like Spiderman and Marvel. They are icons of the comic book world and have also had cinematic variations with multiple actors taking lead in the role. This time around the star behind the cowl is Robert Patterson, known best for his role of Edward Cullen in Twilight and Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter. However, in recent roles such as The Lighthouse and Tenet he has proved himself as a capable and diverse actor that could definitely bring a brooding, dark and fresh take to Bruce Wayne. Even if a lot of fans are not convinced of his ability to become such an iconic figure.

The films premise is a year one Batman, so we don't have another tedious origin movie thankfully. This is Batman somewhat experienced yet still green in some ways. Reeves has shifted focus onto the detective comic nature of Batman and introduces some of Gotham’s most notorious characters with its latest trailer.

We can expect to see Riddler be our main antagonist of the movie. A character not seen in cinema since Jim Careys performance in the 90s. Not forgetting Penguin and Catwoman at the very least featuring prominent roles too, all of these causing trouble for Patterson’s vengeance fuelled Batman. However, if it is to be believed we may even see a brand new Joker if the rumours are true.

Nevertheless, don't go into this movie thinking that this relates to the existing DC universe, it’s not. Unlike Marvel and the MCU, DC has struggled to make a satisfactory connected universe of its comic characters. Because of this it seems they have moved into a process of creating multiple smaller universes of each character, hence this reboot by Reeves.

The Batman is set to release in UK cinemas on March 4. Bosting a star studded cast, new gritty direction and a fresh start for the hero.

It's truly a great time to be a fan of the dark night and comic fan.
