Improvisation, it’s a common stand-up routine for old and new comedians up and down the country and internationally. With so many new faces to choose from who would you even start with?
Well I have a great suggestion for you!
Back in February before we all entered the lock down I saw a genuinely funny duo put on an amazing improve performance at the Leicester venue Upstairs At The Western.
Sex Lies & improvisation is what they called it, why you ask?
Well it’s all about their relationship, the chemistry of couples in dire situations and using REAL lies from the audience but if you want to know more about that feel free to read my preview over on Demon Mag.
Better late than never right?, here is my review.
I have seen a lot of comedy shows live and on screen but I have never seen such an intimate, fresh and captivating act in my life. The way the performers interact with the audience at the start is great, everyone is involved from the get go by voting on the lie that will start the performance.
I applaud any artist on a stage than speaks to us like friends and not just numbers in seats, making us laugh immediately, feel comfortable and welcoming us warmly to watch them.
The lie that I saw that night in question was ‘’I never told you the wedding I went too recently was my exs’’, nothing spectacular when you think about it and a all too common lie for many couples I thought to myself. However the way Alex & Rachel turn your expectations on your head is astounding and needs to be seen!

You are sucked into their dimension they have created in front of your eyes, creating a drama filled story in their own bubble world. your immediately hook into the narrative of the dark comedic play like nothing I have ever seen live or on screen. One of the best aspects of their concept is that every night is going to be different so if you went to see them you would get the same quality but a totally different story as the lies change each time!
Bouncing dry humour and tear jerking moments off each other at the snap of your fingers is just pure talent that deserves recognition by the masses. Its live entertainment at its best but they are relatively unknown which means they have even bigger opportunists to come. I see big things for these people and their future comedy careers!
Next time they tour take a chance on Sex, Lies And Improvisation!
★★★★ 4/5
